The "short cucumber" (also known as the standard, stubby, or field cucumber) features a distinct profile that balances a rugged exterior with a refreshing interior:
- Taste Profile: Lightly sweet and highly cooling with vibrant green, grassy, and melon-like undertones. It carries a slightly stronger, more traditional "cucumber" flavor compared to long, hydroponic English varieties.
- The Skin: Notably thick, tough, and slightly uneven or bumpy. The skin contains higher concentrations of cucurbitacins, giving it a noticeable bitterness that typically requires it to be peeled before eating.
- The Flesh & Core: Extremely crisp, firm, and succulent. However, the central seed cavity develops large, watery seeds that can taste slightly astringent or sour as the fruit matures, so the core is often scooped out.
